English Guy Dropped into Tory Bear's do last night. All very restrained, no triumphalism on show, almost sombre, hardly a drop-to-drink, not a champagne glass in sight.
Earlier I had dropped into the Hansard/Channel 4 Fringe titled People Like Us: Is British Society reflected in Parliament with Iain Dale, C4's Katie Razzall in Chair, Julie Kirkbride MP, Theresa May MP, Baroness Warsi and a late Eleanor Laing MP. All very lively, with an audience determined to get across many perspectives. I put Dizzy's point about day-passes to conference to Theresa May; she stated that this was being looked into alongside Conference moving over a weekend. Good. Continuing an off-topic theme, salaries and MPs expenses were raised. The "John Lewis List" (from where rates are picked/purchases made) is now apparently called the "Ikea List". I suggested Nick Robinson's expenses in exchange for an MPs. "BBC not subject to FOI" back from Iain. Change of Law required then.
Also last-night, the faux-celebrity that is Cherie Blair dropped into a Fringe event "Fixing Broken Britain" getting a deserved amount of verbal stick from the crowd wanting to know why criminals have all the (Human) rights. The Times calls the audience "Ladies", the Guardian "Hecklers". You've got the wrong conference dear Guardian. But the real hoot came from an audience:
Hazel Blears and Rita Fairclough - separated at birth?
Quoting from The Times: Charles Clarke tried to be a peacemaker, which, considering he has just set off a Labour Party war, seemed a bit odd. The final insult came when a man in the audience shouted at Cherie: “I've been a victim of crime three times and you and Rita there and Charlie boy there ...” Jane Moore interrupted. “Rita? Do you mean Hazel?”
“Sorry,” the man said, “I thought she was Rita Fairclough!”
The audience burst out laughing. But Cherie, who through her stepmother also had a Coronation Street link, was puzzled. “Rita Hayworth?” she wondered into the mike. “Excuse me!” cried the man. “I'm trying to speak.”
Whoever that audience member was, all I can say is "Class".
